Introduction
Applications are invited for the position of Charting Specialist (Grade 8) based at Bruma. The successful applicants will be reporting to the Chief Designer. To create and maintain aeronautical charts and chart templates including South African AIP chart management in accordance with Annex 4, Annex 15, ICAO DOC 8168 Volume I and II and DOC 9906 criteria. Draft Airspace and Aeronautical charts including graphics, on behalf of both internal and external customers to ATNS. Liaison and Project management in consultation with the client. Creating custom maps & Reporting on Data Quality, Analysis, Interpretation, Progress, Specifications. The Aeronautical Cartography Specialist undertakes to represent ATNS professionally and wisely, within various user consultation meetings, or consultations including foreign interactions, including but not limited to ATC's and ATC managers, Airlines, Operators, Airport Authorities, the SACAA, workgroups and workshops, forums, and also undertakes as part of the above mentioned interactions, to design aeronautical charts in accordance with laid down criteria and agreed User Requirement Specifications.
Job description

Major Activities
•          Responsible and accountable for ensuring quality charts are produced for publication, in accordance with the relevant criteria, and that charts are compliant for the safe operation of aircraft.
•          Design and maintain charts for Instrument Approach Flight Procedures, SID, STAR, Enroute and Aerodromes for the Integrated Aeronautical Information Package as per ICAO Annex 4, Annex 15, including ICAO DOC 8168 Vol II and ICAO DOC 9906 criteria.
•          Design and maintain Radar Terrain Charts
•          Convert flight procedure design charts into Centralised Aeronautical Database AIXM format.
•          Maintain RSA Instrument Flight Procedure, SID, STAR and Enroute and Aerodromes charts on Centralised Aeronautical Database.
•          Maintain current RSA published Topographical/Aeronautical Maps database as per AP020.
•          Consultation, co-ordination and liaison with clients with regards to the development of aeronautical charts
•          Conduct research into new technology, Instrument Flight Procedure developments and Aeronautical Charting advancements.
•          Remain knowledgeable with respect to all ICAO developments in flight procedure design and AIM.
•          Management of all charting requirements and related duties/resources.
•          Design and maintain aeronautical charts to meet DoT KPIs. This will include draft chart during design phase up to and including final chart version for publication in AIP. 
•          Download daily snapshots from CAD and AeroDB Database for AIXM exchange and ensure uploaded data is AIXM compliant.
•          Maintain auxiliary data on the CAD and AeroDB Database e.g DTM raster, Contours vector Terrain data.
•          Maintain aeronautical charts in the Integrated Aeronautical Information Publication (IAIP) to ensure compliance with Part 177 CATS.
•          Implement NOTAM and Supplement chart amendments procedural and non-procedural from AIS office daily reports.
•          Review of initial and final draft charts
•          Communicate charting services available to potential and existing clients as per AP020.
•          Provide a charting design consultation service to clients when required.
•          Technical liaison with internal and external clients.
•          Design and maintain aeronautical charts for commercial revenue/non-permission targets. This will include draft chart during design phase up to and including final chart version for publication in relevant AIP)
•          Map Compilation for internal/External clients. 
•          Creation of Locality Maps, Topographical Maps, Navigational/Thematic Maps for situational awareness purposes.
•          Convert tabular data to map format.
•          DTM acquisition and visual assessment of accuracy.
•          Responsible for analysis of Radar terrain chart sectors.
•          Spatial and attribute data analysis, interpretation, capturing, integration, and manipulation.
•          Provide input into AE budgeting requirements.
•          Provide input into AE training requirements.
•          Provide input into the AE manpower requirements.
•          Maintain all documentation as per ISO and ATNS filing system.
•          Conduct Centralised Aeronautical Database charting training for identified personnel and clients. 
·               Assist in any additional tasks as may be required from time to time within area of competency.

Minimum requirements

Formal Qualifications:
  • Grade 12
  • GIS/Geospatial, Cartography- tertiary qualification.
  • ICAO accredited Aeronautical Cartography course.
 
Years of Experience:
  • Minimum of two years aviation operational experience.
  • Minimum of two years aeronautical cartography experience; or in lieu of aviation operational experience, candidate has undergone an apprenticeship, which shall provide evidence that supports a minimum of three years aeronautical cartography on-the-job training.
