Job description

Applications are invited for the position of Pool Manager: Area, based in Cape Town. The successful applicant will be reporting to the Manager: ATS - FACT.


The successful candidate will ensure that the Air Traffic Service (ATS) is provided in a safe and expeditious manner, in accordance with Company policy, South African Aviation Legislation and ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARP’s), in order to meet and satisfy the reasonable requirements of the aviation community. To plan and implement procedures and projects and to supervise training and proficiency maintenance programs at FACT.


Major Activities:

  • Plan, organise and coordinate his/ her particular air traffic service in order to satisfy the reasonable requirements of the aviation community.
  • Define new operational requirements in the short, medium and long-term in order to maintain and enhance the ATS, making the necessary recommendations for implementation and managing approved implementation.
  • Schedule external training and supervise on-the-job training to ensure competence of staff for the issuance of licenses and validation of ratings.
  • Conduct unit safety event investigations for the M: ATS on air traffic related incidents.
  • Implement preventative measures aimed at eliminating breaches in service standards.
  • Maintain records and report on traffic activity and all other phases of operations for particular services as may be required by ATNS.
  • Propose and maintain Station Standing Instructions for Area and FIS.
  • Execute Watch Supervisor duties where applicable and scheduled.
  • Maintain a relevant and adequate level of knowledge of current service position in accordance with SARPS.
  • Actively promote and manage safety through the company’s Safety Management System.
  • Ensure the maintenance and availability of all the necessary facilities, technical equipment and publications required for ATS personnel to successfully function.
  • Ensure that the ACC, FIS and associated services operate efficiently and is administered according to prescribed practices, policies and business rules.
  • Manage validation examinations, annual standards checks (performance appraisal) and complete supervisory reports on staff reporting to them, thus ensuring that staff are competent and authorised to execute their designated functions.
  • Direct and schedule the work of personnel under control, to conform with approved/prescribed ATC procedures and practices, thus ensuring that the service is continuous, and standards are maintained.
  • Perform operational duties on ACC and FIS.

Minimum requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A valid Area Procedural and Radar Control rating
  • OJTI

Minimum Experience:

  • At least three years’ experience in executing Area Control Service, coupled with two years on-the-job instructional experience (OTJI qualified).
